How to apply Quaroni's method to your own designs?

One of the most valuable aspects of Progettare un Edificio by Ludovico Quaroni is that it provides practical exercises and suggestions for students to apply his method to their own designs. Quaroni does not intend to impose a rigid or universal formula, but rather to offer a flexible and adaptable framework that can be used in different situations and contexts. He encourages students to experiment and explore different possibilities, to compare and contrast different solutions, to evaluate and justify their choices, to communicate and present their results. Here are some of the steps that Quaroni suggests for designing an edifice:

  • Define the problem: identify the purpose, function and requirements of the edifice, as well as the constraints and opportunities of the site and context.

  • Research the precedents: study the history and theory of architecture, especially the examples that are relevant or similar to your problem, and analyze their strengths and weaknesses.

  • Develop the concept: formulate a general idea or hypothesis that expresses your vision and intention for the edifice, and that guides your subsequent decisions.

  • Design the structure: determine the main elements and components that constitute the edifice, such as columns, beams, walls, floors, roofs, etc., and how they are arranged and connected.

  • Design the space: define the size, shape and distribution of the spaces that compose the edifice, such as rooms, corridors, stairs, etc., and how they relate to each other and to the exterior.

  • Design the light: consider the natural and artificial sources of light that illuminate the edifice, and how they affect the perception and mood of the spaces.

  • Design the color: choose the colors that characterize the edifice, both inside and outside, and how they create contrast or harmony with the surroundings.

  • Design the materials: select the materials that cover and finish the edifice, such as plaster, stone, wood, metal, glass, etc., and how they reflect or absorb light, heat and sound.

  • Test and refine: check your design for coherence, feasibility and quality, using drawings, models or simulations, and make adjustments or improvements as needed.

  • Document and communicate: prepare a clear and convincing presentation of your design, using sketches, plans, sections, elevations, perspectives or other techniques.

These are just some of the steps that Quaroni suggests for designing an edifice. Of course, you can modify or adapt them according to your own needs and preferences. The important thing is to follow a logical and rigorous process that allows you to control and unify your design.
